Question 1: What is the chief end of man?

Answer: Man's chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him for ever.

The Westminster Shorter Catechism begins with one of the most profound questions we can ever ask: what is the purpose of humanity? Or to put it in personal terms: Why am I here, what am I doing, and where am I going? God has not left us any doubt about this matter. Romans 11:36 says, "From him and through him and to him are all things: to him be the glory forever." 1 Corinthians 10:31 tells us, "Therefore whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God." We exist to seek after, desire, and strive for God to be praised, magnified, and exalted in all things.

Amazingly, God has designed us so that our highest duty is also our greatest possible delight. The way that we glorify God is by enjoying him! Only in God can we find the rest and peace of perfect contentment. Psalm 16:5-11 says, "The Lord is my portion, my heritage and my cup. You hold my lot. The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places. Yes, I have an inheritance that is beautiful...You show me the pathway of life. In your presence is fullness of joy, and at your right hand are pleasures that last forever." Psalm 144:15 makes the same point: "Happy are the people who have the Lord as their God!"

Perhaps you have learned that chasing happiness is a never-ending pursuit. The reason is that God has designed us to chase him first, and enjoy happiness as a by-product. What will you make your chief end today?
